Kids' holiday events at Lauriston

Lauriston Castle

Worried about how you'll entertain the kids over the summer holidays? Edinburgh's Lauriston Castle has a family-friendly programme of events, suitable for most ages, running over the next few months.

The events are one-offs, so suitable for anyone visiting Edinburgh for a short break. Kids might enjoy an event running at the castle next Monday (5 July) where they can learn to make their own outfit. A local artist will be on hand to teach little ones how to make accessories including crowns, tiaras, pirate hats and dragon masks.

Kids make wings

Next week offers kids chance to learn about the moths and butterflies that populate Lauriston's woodland. Taking place on Wednesday (7 July), Fantastical Magic Wings is an opportunity for kids to make and decorate wings with mosaic patterns.

Coming up in the next few weeks are classes in tree crafts (8 July), the world of beasties (10 July), drawing (12 July) and magical fairy books (14 July). Kids can bring along a teddy on 17 and 18 July for a special art and craft teddy bear day.

Wood and recycled materials

Music of the Forest (22 July) is a chance to make percussion instruments from wood and recycled materials. Puppet shows take place throughout the day on 25 July.

Adults and children can make stained glass effect panels at a workshop on 26 July. Designs to be inspired by Lauriston Castle's 30 acres of gardens and woodland.

Visit the castle

Children's events typically cost between £4 and £6 per adult and child. The castle, operated by City of Edinburgh Council, is open to the public, with adults tickets costing £5 (concessions £3). Family tickets for two adults and three children under 16 cost £12.50.

Lauriston operates an adult craft programme, with classes in how to paint seascapes (the castle overlooks the Firth of Forth), watercolour and mixed media, printmaking and Japanese blossom trees in silk. Costs start from £15 per class.
