How Edinburgh gets ready for Fringe fun

Fireworks exploded over the Edinburgh skyline last night. The city is getting ready for the start of the Fringe tomorrow, Friday, August 7.

The tents and walkways for the Edinburgh Book Festival are going up in the Charlotte Square gardens. A wooden sign outside the gardens is counting down the days until the official start on August 15. All over the city buildings are changing from church halls, masonic temples, shops and community centres into Fringe venues.

Our local church has become home to a rock band. The altar is hidden behind sound systems. Hymn books have disappeared from the pews. Blu-ish strobe lighting makes the place unrecognisable. Edinburgh buildings I had never even noticed before are now flaunting colourful chipboard banners advertising Fringe shows. Our downstairs neighbour - a former art teacher - has turned her home into an art gallery for the Fringe's duration.

Arty types are filling Edinburgh's cafes and bars. A theatre group has taken over another local church and is holding a free tea party for any local resident who fancies going along. We plan to turn out en masse. Ah - I love Edinburgh in August.
