Best places to soak up the Fringe
Written by Helen Fowler
A selection of the best places to hang out, sip a drink and watch the Fringe go by:
1. Pleasance Courtyard. Numerous bars and cafes set outdoors at one of the premiere comedy venues. Sit back, sip a beer, breathe in the atmosphere. Electric. Also has children's section, where smoking is banned.
2. Udderbelly Pasture Next to the giant purple cow in Bristo Square is the Pasture. Set in open air, it's a good place to graze for food among the plastic grass. All in the shadow of the upturned cow. Kids love it. Burgers, hot dogs, falafel.
3. Book Festival Charlotte Square turns into a tented village in August. Entry is free and you can soak up any sunshine in the bookish atmosphere of the gardens. A lovely place to escape the city. Cafe, bar, bookshop. What more could you want?
4. Sweet Grassmarket. More of an evening haunt than other places mentioned on the list. And exclusively indoors. Drinks are not cheap, but you can admire views of Edinburgh Castle. And you're in the heart of the city's bustling Grassmarket. Popular with musicians. Have you any suggestions for good places to hang out in the Fringe?
