Step back in time to bustling and turbulent 17th century Edinburgh. Explore Thomas Gladstone's land to discover the lives of his tenants and experience what life was really like in Edinburgh's old town 400 years ago.

What to see & do
There are six rooms that can be viewed at Gladstone’s Land. The rooms are furnished with period furniture and objects, to provide a sense of what life was like in the 17th century. One will experience a 17th century retail experience in the luckenbooth that dates back to 1620. The hall dates back to 1550 and was the home of guild-officer for a short time. On the first floor one can discover how a wealthy person lived in the 17th century. One can view a large choice of period furnishings and the spectacular painted ceiling dating to 1620. In the 18th century Green Room, one can appreciate the changes in technology that made life much more pleasant and agreeable. At the end of the visit, spend time in our used bookshop with books well priced at 50p and all proceeds go towards conservation projects at the property.
