Edinburgh gripped by Festival fever

Every August, Edinburgh is gripped by festival fever and the city comes alive as it plays host to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Book Festival, the Jazz Festival and, of course, the one that started them all, the Edinburgh Festival itself.

Since I was a kid growing up in Edinburgh, I've loved the festival magic that lends its sparkle to the city in August. I first experienced the Fringe when my parents took me to puppet shows - and even now, thirty odd years later, I can recall the excitement leading up to our family Fringe outings, the enjoyable dissection for days, if not weeks, afterwards of everything we'd seen and done. A few years later, as a teenager, I had my first taste of Shakespeare (The Tempest) at a Fringe show held in the Church of Scotland Assembly Hall. I can still remember the hardness of the wooden seats, understanding little of the language spoken on stage and my longing for interval icecream. But I retain a special fondness for the play to this day. Since having children of my own, it's been fun to take them to Fringe shows for their first taste of theatre. Our older girl (aged three) enjoys the bubble shows that have become a big feature of the event. Last year she loved Wheels of Life from Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre, a show that featured music, light and installation art.

This year older kids might enjoy Potted Potter, the comic show that presents all seven Potter books in 70 minutes. I haven't seen it myself, but those who have say it's hilarious. The son of a friend admits it's the highlight of his summer holidays. This is Potted Potter's last Edinburgh season, so don't miss out on the chance to see them.

As for grown-ups, personally I'm tempted to go along to see Bridget Christie, appearing at the Gilded Balloon venue in My Daily Mail Hell.
