Edinburgh Fringe defies recession gloom

Sales for this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe are breaking records on previous years, with tickets in high demand, despite the recession. At the end of the first week of sales, the Fringe had already sold just under £800,000 of tickets. Fringe Chief Executive Kath Mainland said: "This is the first time the Fringe has sold more than half a million pounds worth of tickets in its first week." She added: "It is extremely heartening that so many people are still seduced by the appeal of the Fringe." In 2008 bad weather and problems with the ticketing system meant sales slumped by 10% on the previous year, falling to 1.5 million tickets sold.

One way to get cheap tickets this year will be to visit the Half Price Hut on The Mound precinct, next to the National Gallery of Scotland, though tram work in nearby Princes Street will make access more difficult than in previous years. Open for business from 10am on 11 August, the hut will sell tickets on a first-come, first-served basis across August. So it can be worth checking daily for availability. The Half Price Hut is round the corner from the Royal Mile, where an informal street fair featuring Fringe performers takes place daily. The fair is free, but expect to be bombarded by unwanted leaflets promoting Fringe shows.

Tickets can be purchased on-line, by phone at 0131 226 0000 from 10am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, or in person at the Fringe offices, 180 High Street, Edinburgh, from 12-3pm, Monday to Saturday.
