| Dirty dancing comes to Edinburgh |
|
If you're only in Edinburgh a short time and fancy getting some exercise, why not consider a drop-in class at the city's Dancebase in the Grassmarket. Unlike most dance classes, there's no need to book an entire term, you can simply turn up half an hour before the class and buy your ticket. Or buy a ticket on-line from 10am on the day of the class. Prices vary, from around £6 to £7.50. You can experiment at drop-in classes with all manner of new dances - belly dancing, hip hop (especially popular), west African, street and barefoot ballet are all on offer at Dancebase. Ceilidh dancing, capoeira and jazz are available too. Dancebase runs short workshops that could also work well for visitors to Edinburgh. These even include lessons in poledancing and swing dance aerials (like in the Dirty Dancing sequence, where Patrick Swayze lifts his partner Baby above his head) if you're feeling adventurous. There are also social ballroom workshops, teaching the waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, cha cha and tango. There are classes for different levels and ages, including some aimed at youngsters and others at more mature people. There are classes aimed at people who are recovering from an injury or coming back to dance after a break. If nothing else, Dancebase is worth visiting to get a proper look at the building alone, designed by award-winning local architects to open up stunning vistas to neighbouring Edinburgh Castle. It's an eye-opener to be standing in one of the ultra-modern dance studios, listening to the beat of hip hop music, with views up through the glass walls and ceilings to the mediaeval walls of Edinburgh Castle. The building has also helped change public perceptions of the Grassmarket, once the haunt of homeless men and women, now gentrified beyond all recognition. If you're in Edinburgh on 5 December, the centre is having an open day to show visitors more of what's on offer there. There will be free taster sessions then too.
