| Why you will enjoy Edinburgh in September |
|
The free two-day Edinburgh Doors Open Day on 26 and 27 September looks guaranteed to bring some fun to the city after the Fringe ends in August. The event will give access to dozens of city buildings normally out of bounds to the public - and free entry to many places that usually charge. The seventy-plus buildings participating in Edinburgh Doors Open Day range from a lighthouse to a curling house, and from the City Chambers to an infantry barracks. For the first time, the Cockburn Association, (The Edinburgh Civic Trust), is holding the event over two days instead of one, so visitors can see more of Edinburgh's buildings than ever before. Among the buildings featured this year is Granton Lighthouse, originally built as a training centre in 1850 and since repurposed as a cultural hub for artists and musicians. Thompson's Tower is a unique octagonal building designed by William Playfair in 1825 as a 'Curling House' for the Duddingston Curling Society. The building is located within the grounds of Dr Neil's Garden on the banks of Duddingston Loch and is home to a Museum of Curling. So, if you are interested in finding out more about one of Scotland's national sports, what better opportunity. There will be a chance, too, to visit tapestry weavers Dovecot Studios who last year completed a stunning conversion of the disused Victorian Infirmary Street Baths. Edinburgh University's Informatics Forum in Crichton Street is also back by popular demand, so visitors can see the multi-award-winning centre for themselves. Maggie Spalding, co-ordinator of Edinburgh Doors Open Day, said: "With so many residences, places of work, worship and play volunteering to open their doors to the public we have been able to include a diverse and exciting mix of old and new buildings in this year's programme." So there you go. Proof, if you needed it, that Edinburgh can be fun outwith the August festivals.
