The Edge Festival
The band Phoenix

One aspect of the culture-fest that is August in Edinburgh that perhaps gets less attention than it deserves are the bands.

Formerly known as T in the Fringe, The EdgeFestival will bring scores of underground indie talent and mainstreamchart-hoggers to the city for three weeks.

Much of the focus is on local talent. A bunch of Scotland's finest artists and bands will be playing to crowds in a variety of venues across the city, including The Picture House on Lothian Road, The Corn Exchange and the recently-reopened Liquid Rooms on Victoria Street.

Ex-Beta Band frontman Steve Mason, local favourites Broken Records and the thrilling indie-pop of We Were Promised Jetpacks all feature on the festival bill.

The Scottish talent does not end there. The spectral sounds of Phantom Band will be one of the biggest draws among the indie crowd, while music lovers of a slightly older vintage will be keen to check out Mull Historical Society ringmaster Colin McIntyre.

One welcome comeback, along with the return ofthe fire-hit Liquid Rooms, will be the legendary SOMA night, featuring Scotland's own techno-gods Slam.

The talent is not confined to these shores. Highup on my list of must-see bands is the Parisian synth-drenched indie pop of Pheonix, whose thrilling Wolfgang Amadeus was one of the album's of 2009, and multi-talented Beirut.

The festival will see the return to Scotland of US alt-rockers Eels, and ex-Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan, who has collaborated to much acclaim with Isobel Campbell, formerly of Glasgow indie darlings Belle and Sebastian.

Bigger, more established names are also to be found in chart-topping Dizzee Rascal, who plays at The Corn Exchange, mop-haired Mika, on at The Picture House, and the urban sounds of Plan B.

The Edge Festival promoter Dave Corbet says: “This year's line-up continues the Edge Festival's ethos of reflecting the eclectic spirit of the Fringe by bringing together current chart-toppers, established favourites, leftfield acts and ones-to-watch on one diverse bill.”
