Military Tattoo

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo forms the centrepiece of the annual Edinburgh Festival and is held each August in front of Edinburgh Castle. The first Tattoo took place in Edinburgh in 1950 and its combination of pipes, drums and the modern aspects of the armed forces has made this a very popular event.

Since it began, the Edinburgh tatoo has welcomed performers from over 40 countries, displaying to audiences of around  217,000 - 35 per cent of which are from overseas. The Tattoo is also televised in 30 Countries - with over 100 million people watching it worldwide.

The origins of the Tattoo date back to the 17th century when the British Army were at war in Belgium and the Netherlands, and drummers were sent each evening into the towns to tell the soilders that it was time to return to the barracks. The process has gradually became more of a show, with the Edinburgh Tattoo being one of the best you can see.

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2008 will be a celebration of over 50 years of music and spectacular events and promises to be an awsome event. Accommodation at this time of year can be very hard to find due to the popularity of the main Edinburgh festival - so book early to avoid any last minute panic!
