Edinburgh Mela

The Edinburgh Mela brings South Asian and other cultural traditions into the Scottish modern environment - with colourful costumes and gorgeous aromas from the East, the festival is very much worth a visit. You will find traders selling beautiful clothing, jewellery and crafts and get to share the experience with people from Scotland and visitors from abroad.

The festival is Scotlands biggest multicultural arts event that celebrates the great cultural diversity present in Scotland. It prides itself on being a festival that everyone can enjoy and it gurantees to be a fabulous weekend of entertainment and fun! Members of the Indian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities first introduced the Mela to Edinburgh in 1995 and since then the festival has continued to grow - with input from Chinese and African communities.

The festival features artistic work from across the globe - dance, puppertry, music, poetry, theatre, comedy and much more, with new contributors adding different and exciting ideas each year, creating a very unique festival.

Held in September, the festival is the perfect option for those wanting to experince something a bit different from other Edinburgh festivals. 2007's festival highlights included giant Lahori puppets, stilt walkers and Kathakali dance performed by people from Tibet, Iran, China, Brazil, Nepal, India and Iraq.

The Edinburgh Mela 2008 promises to be just as fantastic as this years festival so start planning your trip to Edinburgh! Edinburgh Mela accommodation can be easily found - but to make sure you get the best deal its a good idea to book in advance as self catering places to stay get snapped up pretty quickly!
