The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the largest arts festival in the world and each year thousands of performers (an estimated 18,626 in 2007) flock to the city and put on over 2000 shows in 250 venues across the city. The award-winning shows, fantastic performers and amazing venues make the festival unique and incredibly sucessful.
The 2007 festival hosted an amazing line up of famous names - no longer is the festival just for amateurs and students, with performances from Ricky gervais, Lucy Porter, The Foo Fighters and Razorlight. The festival is well-known for allowing more experimental works to be performed and basically anyone that has the money to higher a venue can join in the festival, which gives it its unique feel and talent for launching great acts into the limelight. |
You are absolutely spolit for choice at the festival - with theatre,
dance and comedy displays present at a total of 31,000 performances,
there is something for everyone at this festival.
The festival was established in 1947 as an alternative to the 'high arts' of the Edinburgh International Festival and has continued to grow each year. Recently there has been an increase in drama performances, however comedy, dance and music are all still heavily featured.
